Neon signs were and still are one of the best things about Route 66. They provided color, vitality, and character to this famous road. Unfortunately, many today assume that the art and artistry of neon is too expensive or involves skills no longer available. Both fears are incorrect.
The theme of the Neon Sign contest is “RELIGHT the NIGHT.” We have two artist representations of two competing signs which utilize the famous Route 66 song by Bobby Troupe; “Get Your Kicks on Route 66.”
We need your help and participation to start the ball rolling to ‘Relight the Night’. You can be apart of a new effort to bring neon back to this great highway by supplementing the still-existing signs with bright new ones. Below, you can vote for one or both, vote once or as many times as you like. We have obtained underwriting from local patrons for the foundation of the campaign, so your vote not only helps pick the one constructed but helps ‘Close the Deal’ to make sure it is erected and lighted. The sign(s) are proposed at 18 ft tall and in full color.
All of the proceeds go to the neon sign; none goes to staff or administrative expenses. If monies are reached which exceed the goal, the remainder will go into a Trust Fund to help small businesses ‘relight’ existing signs or erect new Route 66 neon signs.
